2023 marks my 20th year in public safety. Having the opportunity to have served as a sworn law enforcement officer, EMT, 911 operator and in the private sector has given me a uniquely diverse background. This diverse experience has been invaluable in understanding the differing needs of field responders, emergency communications officers and agency leadership.
I enjoyed the privilege of serving as both an EMT-Intermediate and System Status Controller Training Officer for Grady EMS, the largest EMS provider in the State of Georgia. During my tenure Grady provided 911 EMS services to the City of Atlanta within Fulton County. It was at Grady that I earned my EMD-A and began developing my skills as both a trainer and a developer of curriculum. Working hand in hand with our training coordinator I assisted in developing, testing and ultimately implementing a completely new Communications Training Officer program for the agency known as COBaT -- "Communications Officer Basic Training".
I would later put those training skills to good use while rapidly advancing my technical skills as a Tier - II Implementation Specialist with Zoll Data Systems. I traveled the US and Canada implementing, optimizing, training and consulting with agencies on their RescueNET software suite for the communications center. I had the unique opportunity to visit over 100 fire, EMS and 911 agencies during this time, exposing me to a wealth of both industry best practices and cutting edge solutions to the problems faced by every public safety agency.
While working for Zoll Data I spent my free time serving as an uncompensated State Constable in South Carolina. Focusing primarily on DUI enforcement I expanded my portfolio of field experience to include law enforcement. After moving to Little Rock, Arkansas to accept a position as a systems specialist with a large metropolitan ambulance authority I continued to serve as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff in patrol.
The Association for Talent Development Master Trainer certification program was paramount to my becoming a more effective instructor. It turns out the "way we've always done things" of lecture and death by powerpoint aren't particularly effective training methodologies. Adults learn much more quickly and retain far more when both the trainer and training materials are interactive and engaging. I greatly enjoy seeing the "light bulb" moment on my students' faces when a particularly complex concept clicks into place for them.
It was during my time with Zoll Data that I discovered the gap in services between agency IT professionals and their software vendors. Many of my customers were mid-sized agencies with great internal IT resources, but no access to specialized services such as GIS, database administration, custom report writing, training video production and the like. Many of the largest agencies have the workload to justify employing one or more specialists in these areas. Mid-sized and smaller agencies have the same needs as their larger counterparts, they simply lack the budget or workload to justify a full time resource. This is where I feel Code 3 Consulting can fill this resource void for small to mid-sized agencies.
It is my goal to make these specialized services available and affordable for agencies of any size.
